Principal's Report

Sienna Satskas, a member of our classroom based education support team, will have her final day at FWPS tomorrow.  Sienna started with us three years ago, not long out of school and has provided a level of care and diligence that has belied her age.  Sienna will no doubt utilise much of what she has learnt with us as she moves into the disability field.  We at FWPS all would like to thank Sienna and wish her the very best as she transitions into her new role.

Changing restrictions
Despite the exciting announcement that at 90% many restrictions will soon ease, unfortunately primary school staff and students will still have to maintain mask use when indoors.  The reasons for this relates to the need to reduce COVID spread amongst a largely unvaccinated population and the fact that schools have become a major front in dealing with cases daily.  As schools have yet to be briefed directly on the implications, we will provide more relevant information when we have had an opportunity to digest ongoing implications.

Through School Transition
Usually we provide two visits to student’s new classrooms to encourage the children to begin to form relationships with their new classmates and class teachers.  This year, for the dual reason of late access to 2022 classrooms due to the late completion of the Wallaby Building project, and our very real concerns at trying to reduce the likelihood of spreading COVID-19, we will limit the TST program to one visit, to be held on Tuesday, 14th December.  TST will be held in the morning with students meeting outdoors shortly after the beginning of the school day and continuing through, including senior and junior school recess until midday.  On this day, new students to FWPS (grades 1 to 6) and new teaching staff will also be attending for the first time.  More information will be shared in subsequent newsletters.

Coming up

Next week - Week 8 … starting 22nd November
Summer Breeze event

While our plans to run an outdoor Winter Solstice arts carnival were negated by extended COVID lockdowns, I am pleased that the students efforts will be celebrated with our own internal Summer Breeze celebration.  A big appreciation to our Specialist teaching team who will work with our grade 6 students to prepare a 3D art display for the orchard and video music and performing arts presentation . A team of grade 6 students working with Suzie and Luke will turn the Orchard into a temporary gallery on the Tuesday and on Wednesday, 24th November ALL grades will be timetabled to visit.   Unfortunately, due to our continued COVID challenges, only students and staff will be able to attend in person.  Highlights will of course be featured for assembly, newsletter and our social media feed.

During week 9 (starting 29th November)

During week 9 of this term, the grade 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s will be running an onsite camp program as our practical substitute for overnight camps, something we sadly have not been able to do for two years.  The grades 3 and 4 will run their program on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the grades 5 and 6 will run theirs on Thursday and Friday.  While I have heard there are some terrific ideas in the planning stage, our staff team are keeping their cards close to their chest.  A big appreciation to the 3-6 staffing teams for all the additional work associated with this initiative.

Prep transition visits
Our K-P Transition coordinator, Karri has been busily planning for Prep 2022 students and parents to visit around the many restrictions.  With our plans well organised, even with adjusting rules, we will maintain a plan for all students to visit a prep classroom and meet their teacher over the entire week.  Parents will receive the child’s grade placement next week, allowing them the opportunity to book an individual class visit with their child’s teacher for the following week.

During week 10  (starting 6th December)
Prep 2022 play visits

Due to the current reduction in restrictions, we feel more confident (with fingers crossed) in inviting our 2022 Prep students and parents and carers for a play visit to the yard from 3.45 pm on either Tuesday, 7th or Thursday 9th December.  All information that pertains to our Prep starters is of course sent to families directly and in much greater detail!  We anticipate that there will be a second hand pop up uniform stall operating for the new prep families on those two dates.

With changing restrictions we are regularly reassessing our options and are hopeful we will yet be able to have the entire cohort visit during the final week of term.

During week 11 (starting 13th December)
Grade 6 Graduation … will be held at school in the Gecko building during the afternoon of Monday, 13th December.  While we are disappointed that for the second year running our event will be unable to host parents and family members, due to our incapacity to use an external venue meeting our needs, we were left with our only option of using our own space.  In an upgrade from last year, our event will be livestreamed, as well as, like last year, being available afterwards in video form.  We know that with the collaborative work of our staff and student teams, we will again ensure graduation will be a memorable experience for our grade 6 graduation cohort.

Through School Transition - Tuesday, 14th December (see above).

Park to Park grade 5 and 6 excursion day
We are pleased that this year we will be able to proceed with our annual Park to Park activity and picnic day for the students in grades 5 and 6.  This will be held on Wednesday, 15th December, starting at Pipemakers Park and concluding at Coulson Gardens in Maribyrnong. Students will be bussed to Pipemakers Park for a jog or walk to Coulson Gardens along the river.  Our students will have the opportunity to chat, play, and enjoy a picnic together.  In a historical ‘rights of passage’ our grade 6 students are allowed to collect the signatures of their peers and teachers on their bespoke graduation shirts.  All students will be transported from Coulson Gardens at the conclusion, well in time for the end of the school day.

Final day of term … will be on Thursday, 16th December at 1.30 pm.  Our TheirCare after school program will run from this earlier time.  A Curriculum Day for staff has been approved for Friday, 17th December.  A pre Christmas Holiday program will be run by TheirCare on that day and continue the following week.  Bookings through TheirCare.

Vaccination requirements for parents, carers and other visitors not performing work

Parents, carers and other adults who enter school buildings must have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and must have had two doses of COVID-19 vaccine by Monday 29 November 2021 or a valid medical exception. The following limited exceptions apply:

  • when attending to administer medical treatment to their own child when the treatment cannot be administered by the school
  • when attending to collect their child who is unwell and cannot leave the school building unaccompanied by their parent/carer
  • when attending for a short time that does not involve any sustained contact with staff or students, for example, to collect a completed art project or similar.
Safety Reminder
If using our TheirCare OSHC program after 8 am or before 4 pm (when the boom gate is operating), please do not walk through the car park to make your way to Emu Corner.  Please enter at the car park gate and duck to your right through the single green gate that leads to a path at the front of Koala building, continue to your left between Koala and Wallaby, along the basketball court side of Gecko and past the bike shed to Emu Corner.  It is only probably an additional 40 metres to walk and is a whole lot safer.
A message from the Canteen

Post lockdown we know a lunch order is your saviour!   Whilst it states that you can place lunch orders up until 8.45am, the traffic between 8am-8.45am has risen sharply in that 45-minute timeframe.  Munchmonitor have suggested you place your order the night before to escape the morning rush and finding that the system is overloaded and unable to access.

Lost Property
We have a few bits and pieces in the office. Please let us know if any of these belong to you.

Repeated Reminders

Please ensure that your child has a mask with them at school if they are required to wear one.  It is not a school responsibility to provide them and despite media reports of many being purchased for schools, we have yet to receive any consignments of masks since our return to onsite learning.  As the elastic frequently breaks on disposable masks, every day, if a disposable mask is the mask of choice, please ensure there is one in hand and a few spare in their bag. Senior students should be able to manage this without collecting them daily from the office.

Students who have not returned
For the small number of families who have chosen not to return to onsite learning, we have collated some fabulous learning links on our school website at: They are of course available for every family to access.

Leaving FWPS?
We are still hearing from some of our students that they think they might be leaving. It is really appreciated if the parents can contact us.   If your family is planning to move to another school for the 2022 school year we require to hear from you NOW in writing.  The complex task of forming class lists is a continuing priority presently and we need the student lists to be accurate. This does not apply to Grade 6 leavers, but of course does include younger siblings.    Please complete in the following link : Leaving FWPS in 2021

Dear parents, guardians, staff and friends!

Last week we have been continuing our Just Dance competition and there are some real champions that have beaten Nelly on different occasions. There has been some prizes given out for best dancers, Dean, Ella, Emma, Louis and Lydia have been some of these champions in the mornings and afternoons.

The wet weather has made it a little harder to get outside and playing but we have been utilising the gym and children are loving playing dodgeball and skittles as well as other group games. Callum has put a challenge out to all TheirCare that he will run a dodgeball competition towards the end of term where the staff will also enter a team!

This week’s TheirCare Star of the week is Louis Mullen from 2LP for his amazing dancing and positive attitude that he brings to TheirCare each day. Thank you Louis!

With the return of all the children comes of return of larger amounts of lost property at TheirCare. If you’re missing hats or jumpers we have a tub that is filled but will be emptied into the school lost property each week. So please check on sign in and outs!

For the next couple of weeks Luke will be going to University Park Primary School to support the TheirCare program there Tuesday and Thursday. Callum, Eleanor and a few other staff will be back during the week to support Nelly and the children will be able to see them.

The Christmas and 2022 Holiday Program has gone live and you can now book. We will be running a pupil free day on the 17th of December and the holiday program will begin on the 20th of December till the 22nd and then continue on the 10th. We can’t wait too see you all!

We continue to collect donations for ASRC and we appreciate all of your generousity. If you would like to donate there is a collection box at the front of the office and in the TheirCare room. They are looking for items with an extended shelf life. Currently the key items they are looking for are Tuna, Honey, Tomato paste, pickled vegetables, peanut butter, sweet and savoury biscuits, laundry power, toothbrushes, disposable razors.

For other things and a more exact list have a look at;

For all families, if you have any questions about TheirCare and would like to come and have a chat please come visit us in Emu Corner in the morning or afternoon, alternatively you can contact us on the details provided and we will help you as best we can.
